Teaching of physics and astronomy has been conducted at the University of Warsaw ever since it was established in 1816. The Faculty of Physics exists since 1969. The highly skilled teaching and research staff at the Faculty of Physics provides for a high level of instruction. Among the 218-member teaching faculty, we have 73 full professors, 64 habilitated PhDs, and 81 PhDs; 12 of our professors are members of the Polish Academy of Sciences. Currently we have about 600 undergraduate students and 116 PhD students.
Our graduates are well-trained during their studies in rigorous reasoning, and have no trouble with finding employment. They are awaited by institutions of higher education in Poland and abroad, R & D institutes, schools, companies in IT, consulting, insurance, banks, medical institutions, publishers, and the media.
The University of Warsaw Faculty of Physics is one of 59 institutions that were granted funds within the program Commissioned Specialisations. Thanks to these funds those physics students who undertake graduate (MA) studies in 2010 will be able to obtain special scholarships of up to 1000 PLN per month, making it yet more attractive to study this difficult but fascinating field.
The Faculty of Physics has at its disposal a number of well equipped specialistic research laboratories. In addition, much of our research is conducted in collaboration with leading foreign institutions, such as: CERN, in Switzerland; DESY and GSI, in Germany; Oxford and Cambridge in Great Britain; laboratories of the CNRS in France; Fermilab in the USA. Thanks to this collaboration, students are able to take part in some of the most important physical experiments currently conducted all over the world. The Faculty also takes part in the European Union's SOCRATES-ERASMUS Programme, which allows students to take part of their courses in foreign institutions.
Students at the Faculty of Physics have the use of specialized libraries, with a wealthy collection of literature in physics and related sciences, and of excellently equipped computing laboratories, with over a hundred workstations with Internet connectivity. At the Faculty you will find several student study groups. In your leisure time you might want to try out for the Faculty Choir.
