Some time ago, I came across one of the campaigns asking one to send a letter to a company and thus request that they join the Ethical Trading Initiative and get involved in monitoring the ethical side of their supplies. Despite serious doubts concerning the effectiveness of such an action, I sent my letter. I was already used to receiving responses from politicians to whom I had written within the Amnesty International framework. However, I did not expect a response from this company, especially because this was a British company and I was temporarily working in Italy, so that I gave them my Italian address. Imagine my surprise when not only a response came, but also it was a positive one. Also recently, I was surprised to receive a non-automatic reply from a government to my e-mail concerning the campaign to ban landmines. The message came within several hours from the time I had sent mine.
