Bylaws of the Zdzisław Szymański Prize

  1. General Conditions

    § 1
    1. The Zdzisław Szymański Prize, henceforth referred to as "the Prize", established by the Council of the Warsaw University Faculty of Physics, henceforth referred to as "the Council", under its resolution of April 29, 2002, is awarded in accordance with the following regulations.

    2. The Prize is intended to support and promote the development of scientific research in the field of nuclear structure physics.

    3. The Prize Selection Committee, henceforth referred to as "the Committee", is established to present the winner of the Prize.

    4. The Prize is awarded by the Dean of the Warsaw University Faculty of Physics, on a motion of the Committee.

    5. The Committee's decision may not be appealed.

    6. The Prize consists of a one-year monetary scientific stipend and a certificate citing the contributions made by the recipient.

    § 2
    The scientific stipend, referred to in § 1 item 6, is financed by the "PRO PHYSICA" Foundation, henceforth referred to as "the Foundation", from the funds collected on the Foundation's subaccount, opened for this purpose by the Foundation's Board of Directors.

  2. Awarding of the Prize.

    § 3
    1. The Prize is awarded to an individual for outstanding scientific achievements in theoretical or experimental research in the field of nuclear structure physics.

    2. The Prize is to be awarded no more often than once a year.

    3. The Prize in a given year is awarded for the period of the previous calendar year, or the subsequent previous calendar years for which the Prize was not awarded.

    4. The Prize can only be awarded to a person who received a scientific title or degree (in the meaning of the Act 65/386 of September 12, 1990 On Scientific Titles and Degrees, that is: Professor, D. Sc., Ph. D.) in the period mentioned in item 3 of this paragraph.

    5. The date when the candidate acquired the title or degree is understood as the date of the act that awarded it.

    6. The Prize can be awarded in two editions: national and international. Items 4 and 5 apply directly to the national edition, while analogous rules are applied to the international edition.

    7. Candidates for the Prize may be nominated by:
      1. Experts in the field of nuclear structure physics, not excluding the candidate himself.
      2. Scientific Councils and Faculty Councils that have the right to award scientific degrees.
      3. The Committee.

    8. The nominations should be presented to the Chairman of the Committee.

    9. The Prize can only be awarded to persons who have accepted their candidacy for the Prize.

  3. The Committee.

    § 4
    1. The Committee consists of five members - distinguished personalities working actively in the field of nuclear structure physics. One of the members of the Committee is its Chairman.

    2. Each member's term in the Committee lasts no longer than five years. Reelection is only possible five or more years after the end of the member's last term.

    3. Members of the Committee perform their duties voluntarily.

    § 5
    Committee election and appointment procedure:

    1. The first Chairman of the Committee is appointed by the Council. Subsequently, the member whose term ends the soonest automatically becomes Chairman, when the term of the previous Chairman ends.
    2. The term of the first Chairman lasts one year.
    3. The other four members of the first Committee are appointed by the Council on a motion of the Chairman of the Committee, in which the Chairman also states the terms to be served by each member: two, three, four and five years.
    4. Each year, the Committee elects a new member, who substitutes the member whose term ends that year.
    5. If for any reason a member leaves the Committee before the end of his term, the Committee elects a new member for a shorter term, equal to the period that remains to the end of the term of the substituted member.
    6. New members of the Committee are appointed by the Council on a motion of the Committee.

    § 6
    1. Meetings of the Committee are called by the Chairman at least once a year.

    2. Meetings of the Committee may be held using electronic communications equipment.

    3. The Committee may appoint a Secretary of the Committee, whose work consists of registering the candidates for the Prize on behalf of the Chairman and of organizing the work of the Committee.

    4. The Committee may decide not to ask the Dean to award the Prize in a given year.

    § 7
    The Committee is entitled to:

    1. Regulate the details of the Committee members' election procedure, which are not specified in § 5.
    2. Regulate the procedure of awarding the Prize, including decisions to honor foreign scientific titles and degrees in the international edition of the Prize (see § 3 item 6).
    3. Bring forward motions to the Dean to award the Prize.

    § 8
    The attachments to these regulations are:

    1. Resolution of the Foundation's Board of Directors number 2/2002 of April 12, 2002, concerning the creation of the subaccount mentioned in § 2.
    2. Resolution of the Foundation's Board of Directors number 5/2002 of April 12, 2002, concerning the Foundation's obligation to provide funding for the Council's decisions.
