Building a Heusinger steering from scratch was easier than I thought. Using Valve Gear simulator I was able to design my steering well and though I was quite in a hurry to see the result and made the rods not really to size, the engine is working.

The present design failed because:

  • The eccentric crank has been pressed onto pin sticking out of the wheel. The joint has failed after an hour or so.
  • The pin used to adjust the position of the radius rod in the link frequently falls out (however, the pin that has been pressed into the radius rod and moves along the link sits there firmly)
  • The only way to adjust valve-rod length was pressing it deeper into the piston
  • The eccentric crank and eccentric rod has been joined with the screw soldered into the former. The soldering was however only done on the surface, and the screw unscrewed itself and felt into the carpet...

I have redesigned the engine. The new one will be build almost completely from laser-cut parts
