On 7 October 2025, the Faculty of Physics, University of Warsaw, hosted a delegation from Baden-Württemberg led by Petra Olschowski, Minister of Science, Research and the Arts of the federalstate. The delegation included members of the Baden-Württemberg Parliament as well asrepresentatives of leading universities and research institutions from the region. The visit providedan excellent opportunity to exchange experiences, present the scientific achievements andresearch infrastructure of the Faculty of Physics, and strengthen cooperation with universities andresearch institutions in Baden-Württemberg.

Among the guests were: Priv.-Doz. Dr. Michael Preusch, Member of the Baden-WürttembergParliament (CDU); Frank Bonath, Member of the Baden-Württemberg Parliament (FDP); Prof.Angelika Altmann-Dieses, Rector of the Technical University of Applied Sciences Mannheim; Prof.Kerstin Krieglstein, Rector of the University of Freiburg; Prof. Melanie Arndt, Vice-Rector forInternationalisation and Sustainability at the University of Freiburg; Dr. Alexandra Bormann, Rectorof Furtwangen University of Applied Sciences; Prof. Rainer Börret, Dean of the Faculty of Optics andMechatronics, Aalen University of Applied Sciences; Prof. Christian Dettmann, Vice-President forResearch, Transfer and International Cooperation, Ulm University of Applied Sciences; Prof. AndreasDreuw, Vice-Rector for Research and Digitalisation, Heidelberg University; Prof. Peter Gehler fromthe Tübingen AI Center; Prof. Thomas Hirth, Vice-President for Transfer and International Affairs,Karlsruhe Institute of Technology; Prof. Martina Klärle, Rector of Baden-Württemberg CooperativeState University; Prof. Michael Weber, Rector of Ulm University; Prof. Andreas Pyka, Vice-Rector forInternational Affairs, University of Hohenheim; Prof. Christoph Reich, Vice-Rector for Research andSustainability, Furtwangen University of Applied Sciences; Prof. Steffen Staab, Director of theInstitute of Artificial Intelligence Analytic Computing, University of Stuttgart; as well as officials fromthe Ministry of Science, Research and the Arts of Baden-Württemberg and the Embassy of Germanyin Warsaw.

The delegation was welcomed on behalf of the Faculty authorities by Prof. Jacek Szczytko, Vice-Deanfor Research, and Prof. Krzysztof Turzyński, Vice-Dean for Student Affairs, who presented the historyof the Faculty as well as its educational and research offer.

Minister Petra Olschowski emphasized that the development of modern technologies is a strategicpriority for Baden-Württemberg, and that innovation in the fields of physics, artificial intelligence, health, and life sciences remains among the key focus areas of the region.

“For me, this visit is an important opportunity to strengthen European partnerships in science andresearch. The University of Warsaw has been our long-standing and valued partner, and we arecurrently developing this collaboration through projects under the Horizon Europe programme. Aparticularly valuable example is the cooperation between the University of Ulm and the University ofWarsaw within the FLORIN project. This project demonstrates how universities from differentcountries can work together to address major scientific challenges and achieve meaningful results,”said Minister Petra Olschowski.

The FLORIN (FLuorescent nanO-agents for super-Resolution Imaging) project, implemented under theHorizon Europe programme, aims to enable early detection of Alzheimer’s disease and improve thequality of life of affected individuals. Researchers plan to develop a real-time monitoring devicecombining temperature biosensing with molecular bioimaging capabilities to detect changes in livingtissues.

The delegation then attended presentations showcasing research conducted at the Faculty of Physicsand other units of the University of Warsaw – including physics (Dr. Radek Łapkiewicz, Prof. DominikaZgid, Dr. Johannes Binder), biology (Prof. Łucja Kowalewska), and chemistry (Prof. Dominik Gront). The guests also visited the Faculty’s laboratories – including the Quantum Imaging Laboratory, theLayered Materials Laboratory, and the MakerspaceUW.

At the end of the visit, the delegation joined the Faculty community gathered in lecture hall 0.03 towatch the announcement of the Nobel Prize in Physics. The visit provided an excellent opportunity to exchange experiences, present the researchachievements and infrastructure of the Faculty of Physics, and further strengthen collaboration withuniversities and research institutions from Baden-Württemberg.
