On 13 October 2025, students of the nuclear energy programme and the nuclear reactor physics specialization at the Faculty of Physics, University of Warsaw, took part in an educational visit to the National Radioactive Waste Repository (KSOP) in Różan. This facility is the only site in Poland designated for the storage of low- and intermediate-level radioactive waste. The repository is located on the grounds of a former Russian military fort and has been in operation since 1961.
The study visit to Poland’s only radioactive waste repository provided students with first-hand insight into the principles of safe radioactive waste management and the infrastructure supporting the national radioactive waste management system. The visit was organized with the financial support of the project “University of Warsaw for Nuclear Energy: Creation of a New Degree Programme and Modernization of Existing Educational Paths Related to Nuclear Energy”, implemented under the European Funds for Social Development (FERS) 2021–2027. This project supports the development of academic staff and the adaptation of educational programmes to meet the needs of the energy transition based on nuclear technology.
The Faculty of Physics, University of Warsaw, has long-standing experience in training specialists for the nuclear industry. Currently, FUW offers undergraduate studies in Nuclear Energy and a specialization in Nuclear Reactor Physics within the Physics programme. These study paths are conducted in collaboration with universities renowned for their expertise in nuclear education, including the KINGS KEPCO International Nuclear Graduate School (South Korea), the Czech TechnicalUniversity in Prague, and the Slovak University of Technology in Bratislava.
