Students of the Nuclear Energy program at the Faculty of Physics, University of Warsaw – Mikołaj Jagieniak, Jan Dziubak, and Nikodem Ciomcia – took part in the international Nuclear Skills Winter School, held from 15 to 20 March 2026 at the Joint Research Centre in Karlsruhe, Germany. The event was organized by the JRC in cooperation with the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT).
The school was addressed to STEM students and aimed to develop competencies in the field of nuclear science, as well as to showcase modern research and advanced research infrastructure available in Europe.
The program included intensive theoretical and practical sessions, such as lectures on radioactive waste management, reactor safety, and modern nuclear technologies, including SMR/AMR reactors. An important component of the school were also visits to JRC laboratories. Participants worked in teams on research projects, which they presented at the end of the program. The event provided an excellent opportunity for knowledge exchange, skills development, and networking with experts and students from various countries.
The participation of Faculty of Physics students was made possible thanks to financial support from the project “University of Warsaw for Nuclear Energy. Creation of a new study program and restructuring of existing educational paths related to nuclear energy,” implemented under the European Funds for Social Development (FERS) 2021–2027 programme. The project supports the development of academic staff and the adaptation of educational offerings to the needs of the energy transition based on nuclear technology.
The Faculty of Physics at the University of Warsaw has many years of experience in educating specialists for the nuclear industry. Currently, it offers an undergraduate engineering program in nuclear energy, as well as a specialization in nuclear reactor physics within the physics degree. These programs are carried out in cooperation with renowned institutions in nuclear education, including KEPCO International Nuclear Graduate School (South Korea), Czech Technical University in Prague, and the Slovak University of Technology in Bratislava.
