During the 156th Session of the General Assembly of the Polish Academy of Sciences, new foreign members of the Polish Academy of Sciences were elected. This distinction is awarded to outstanding scholars from outside Poland whose scientific achievements are of significant importance for the development of global science and international cooperation. Among those elected was Prof. Witold Nazarewicz, a researcher from our Faculty.
The election of foreign members is one of the most important instruments for strengthening the international dimension of the activities of the Polish Academy of Sciences. Foreign membership is granted to scientists of recognized international standing whose scientific achievements and cooperation with the Polish research community contribute to the development of science and to strengthening Poland’s position in the global research landscape. In this year’s election procedure, 90 applications were correctly submitted, on the basis of which 86 candidates were nominated for foreign membership of the Polish Academy of Sciences. The nominations were evaluated during plenary meetings of the divisions of the Polish Academy of Sciences, which selected 66 candidates from among all those nominated to be recommended for election by the General Assembly.
Among the newly elected members of Division III: Mathematical, Physical and Chemical Sciences, and Earth Sciences of the Polish Academy of Sciences was Prof. Witold Nazarewicz, a researcher from our Faculty.
Prof. Witold Nazarewicz is an outstanding nuclear physicist and a professor at Michigan State University. He is a Fellow of the American Physical Society and the American Association for the Advancement of Science, as well as a member of the Polish Physical Society. For his outstanding scientific achievements, he has received numerous distinctions, including the Tom W. Bonner Prize and the Marian Smoluchowski Medal of the Polish Physical Society.
