Opera

The Organizing Committee cordially invites all participants of the conference to:

This year premiere of
The Haunted Manor
(in Polish: Straszny Dwór)
Opera in four acts

Friday, February 9, 2001, at 19:00

Please pick up your tickets at the registration counter. You will have a choice of two kinds of tickets: Amphitheater and Balcony. Tickets will be distributed free of charge and as long as they last, so hurry to register! Tickets for the accompanying persons can also be purchased at the registration counter.

The opera will be performed in the beautiful Warsaw Opera House (Teatr Wielki) which is located at Plac Teatralny 1 in an old building with interesting interior and the exhibition of theatrical costumes.

The opera The Haunted Manor was written in 1865 by a Polish composer Stanisław Moniuszko. The action takes place in the middle of the XVIIIth century in a typical Polish nobleman's manor. Two brothers swear never to get married. Having met two beautiful girls they change their decision. Interesting scenery and costumes, fascinating plot.

Texts of arias will be displayed live in English during the performance.

Guided tour in the city of Warsaw

The Organizing Committee cordially invites all participants to a guided visiting tour around the city. The bus will leave from the conference site (Hoża 69) on Saturday, February 10, at 14:00 (after the lunch). The tour will include a drive across the city and sightseeing of its most important buildings and monuments, as well as a walk through the Old Town and a visit to the Warsaw Historical Museum. At the Museum you will see a movie (in English) showing the World War II destruction of the city and its reconstruction in the fifties. The movie is itself a monument, because it was realized in the purest soc-realistic style of those times.

Please sign up for the tour at the registration counter. The tour is free of charge, and the accompanying persons are welcome.

Public transportation

There are plenty of tram and bus lines, as well as one underground metro line, available in the city of Warsaw. You will find a detailed and up-to-date city map in your conference portfolio. A unique transportation ticket of 2.40 zł can be bought at all newspaper stands. Note that one has to use one ticket per each trip, and stamp the ticket as soon as one boards a bus, tram, or metro. Please beware of pickpockets in all public places, including transportation.

There are also several inexpensive taxi companies available. For example, three companies have their permanent stands just outside the arrival hall at the airport: RADIO TAXI - 919, SAWA TAXI - 644-4444, and MERC TAXI - 677-7777. The corresponding phone numbers are displayed on roofs of all their cars. These companies feature English speaking drivers and dispatchers. A ride from the airport to downtown (e.g., to the Grand-Orbis hotel) costs about 25-35 zł, depending on traffic jams (50% more after 22:00 and on weekends). Services offered by other companies, with dispatchers and drivers waiting inside the arrival hall, can by much more expensive, and are discouraged.

Here you can find information on the conference site and on how to get there.

Custom regulations

Upon entering and leaving Poland you have to observe Polish customs regulations, which are very similar to those you find in most other European countries. In particular, if you do not bring anything special into the country (from the customs point of view) you may go through the "nothing to declare" green gate. You may bring in any amount of cash without declaration (in foreign currency or Polish zlotys), and upon leaving you may take with you without declaration any amount of cash up to 5000 Euros.
